ATTN. HUNTERS (especially those who hunt with dogs): On January 19 a major sewer line along Clara Barton Parkway in Montgomery County collapsed, the wastewater is now entering the Potomac River and the C&O Canal in the area while repair work is underway. The public is advised to avoid any contact with the wastewater. Untreated sewage can contain many pathogens causing a variety of illnesses ranging from E. coli to hepatitis. Contact with untreated overflow may cause people to get sick and could bring these pathogens into homes. Additionally, take precautions if waterfowl hunting with a dog. It is best to leave your dog at home to avoid potential exposure. For additional information please go to the DCWater.com website.

Always Remember

When we think of 9/11, we remember the bravery of firefighters, police officers, medics, and countless volunteers. But among them was another group of heroes—search and rescue dogs. With their sharp senses and loyal hearts, nearly 300 dogs worked at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and the Flight 93 crash site.

They crawled through rubble, balanced on jagged steel, and searched tirelessly for survivors and victims. Beyond their lifesaving efforts, they offered something equally powerful: comfort. Exhausted first responders and grieving families often found solace in simply hugging them.

Some became unforgettable symbols of hope. Bretagne, the last surviving 9/11 search dog, searched tirelessly in New York. Roselle, a guide dog, led her blind owner down 78 floors of the North Tower to safety. Apollo, with the NYPD K9 unit, narrowly survived falling debris yet kept working.

Handlers spoke of their unbreakable bond with these dogs—partners who trusted each other with their lives. When hope seemed lost, handlers even staged “rescues” so the dogs could experience the joy of saving someone, lifting spirits on both sides of the leash.

The dogs of 9/11 remind us that heroism isn’t only human. Their loyalty, courage, and compassion carried light into the darkest days.
