Nobody knows about the backyard.

From the street, it's a Greek Revival. Stately. Proper. Very House on Park.

But past the giant maple — our own gigantic umbrella — there's Mark's garden.

The brand new rust orange greenhouse. The stick fence. White mandevilla climbing the arch. Marigolds and zinnias along the outside.

Inside: a tripod bean pole. A 12 foot ladder reaching straight up to the sky — summer squash growing up it like it has somewhere to be. Cherry tomatoes in a 6 foot circle. Cucumbers, cucamelons, gourds climbing everything they can find.

On the ground: cantaloupe, pumpkins, watermelon. Peppers tucked in and around.

Every morning Mark is out there for at least three hours. Watering. Tying. Trimming.

At night the whole thing lights up. Solar lights throughout. The cherry tomato circle glowing. The bean pole. The greenhouse. The arch.

I'd love to be one of our backyard neighbors. They get the whole show.

Don't have to do a thing.

It's time to properly introduce Sonny & Cher.

Originally barn cats. Now residents of a custom catio — 10x12 dog run, roof, tree branches woven inside for climbing, and 12" ductwork leading from the garage so they can come and go at will.

Cher took to the branches immediately. Mostly falling off. Hanging by one paw. Pulling herself back up. Continuing on her way as if nothing happened.

One morning Mark is in the garden. Back neighbor calls over.
"Hey — I see you've got some monkeys back there."
"They're not monkeys. They're cats."
"You know you need a permit for those monkeys."
"They're not monkeys. They're cats."

Next morning. Different neighbor.
"Nice morning. You know you need a permit for those monkeys."
"They're not monkeys. They're cats."

Next day. Another neighbor. Same thing.
Mark is losing his mind.

Then Miss Beverly. 89 years old. Next door. We bring her cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini from the garden. She says "I hear you've got monkeys in that cage — can I see them?"

Sure, Miss Beverly. Come on over.

Sonny & Cher are thrilled. I'm scratching them through the links. Miss Beverly peers in.
"Those aren't monkeys. Those are cats."

Yes, Miss Beverly. They're cats.

"Can you pass that along to the neighbors?"

Meanwhile...

A rare quiet morning. Nothing much to do.

Calling the state about a tax credit. Working on menus. Designing a new tee. Posting about a bar menu. Getting ready to print.

Also roasting tomatoes.

Because a friend reminded me I could.

I offered to paint the greenhouse door in the spring.

It's August.

Every morning at the House is Groundhog Day.

On the other side of the door, guests are waking up to fresh coffee, juice, yogurt...

On my side: Fancy Feast w/gravy. Served in two locations. With varying reviews.

Ozzy has been staring at me since 4am. She wants it immediately. All of it.

Mark has quietly left the kitchen. The smell. The look of it. Can't blame him.

Then there's Van.

Van is nowhere to be found. Never is. I bring breakfast to him. In bed.

He sniffs it. Manages a few licks of gravy. Then the quick exit — head up, paw shake, like he can't believe he's been tricked again into eating this slop. Runs from the bowl, disgusted. Every morning.

Breakfast in bed. And he still hates it.

Poor Van.

I'm convinced Van was a snooty French chef in a past life. He must have spit in someone's food. This is his eternity.

Karma Van.
..

Breakfast is served.

The pollinators are struggling.

Everyone knows this.
(well…almost everyone)

So when a bee was found drowning in the garden birdbath this morning, we acted quickly.

A raft was constructed from the stick pile.

The bee was saved. The raft remains — for all future bees in need.

You're welcome, humanity.

Oh zinnias, you are beautiful! (Jane, they look perfect on your beautiful resin tray! 💕)
