🛷⛄️Snow play the right way!

Building snowmen, making snow angels, and sledding are great winter pastimes, just not where signs like this are posted. We don't want your next outing to be spoiled by a ticket, so make sure you’re playing in a permitted area. Snow play is permitted in designated areas on public property, such as City parks & picnic areas.

Snow play in parking lots, including the Castle Rock Trailhead Parking Lot, on roadways, and on other people’s property is prohibited. Remember to park in designated parking lots and don't park on any City street when snow conditions exist – you could be cited and towed.

There are many opportunities to safely enjoy the snow in Big Bear Lake. For more information and a list of locations, please visit 's website (link in bio).

Thank you for respecting the environment and our community!

Be prepared when you come up!

Preparing to drive in the winter weather, but don't know what “Chain Controls” mean? We've got you covered! Here's how Caltrans defines the 3 levels of :

R-1: Chains or snow tread tires required. Snow tires must have
a tread depth of 6/32” with “MS”, “M/S”, “M+S” or the words “MUD AND SNOW” imprint on the tire’s sidewall.

R-2: Chains or traction devices required on all vehicles except
4-Wheel Drives (4WD) or All-Wheel Drives (AWD) with snow tread tires on all 4 wheels. 4WD’s must carry chains. If you have 4WD, engage it. Refer to vehicles operator’s manual for correct selection of 4WD or off-road functions.

R-3: Chains or traction devices required on all vehicles - NO EXCEPTIONS!

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

⛓️ Check to make sure that your chains/cables fit your vehicle's tires.

🗺️ Monitor road conditions frequently with the Caltrans QuickMap tool.: https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/. Also available in our app, Big Bear Lake 365.

Be careful driving and be aware of road conditions.

⚠️ Be prepared for wet wintery weather if you're planning to be in Big Bear Lake for the few days! The National Weather Service forecasts that Big Bear Lake could receive 3-4 inches of rain between Friday and Sunday; possibly more in the passes and south facing slopes. While there is a possibility of overnight snow on Saturday-Sunday at 7,000 feet and Sunday evening at 7,700 feet, little to no snow accumulation is expected. Southwest winds are expected to kick up on Sunday at speeds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

🚧 The City is closely monitoring the weather conditions and is responding accordingly through coordinated efforts with our interagency partners. Staff has been proactive in preparing for this weather system over the past several days and will continue to work until the system passes and the conditions have returned to normal. Public Works staff are presently deployed in 10-hour shifts and on standby on Saturday and Sunday to respond to any impacts associated with the current weather system, including clearing culverts and storm drains to ensure that water drains properly, and city-maintained roads remain open. As a reminder, our Public Works staff and contract support crews only plow City-maintained streets when snow accumulation reaches 3 inches or more.

🗺️ We want to remind motorists to monitor road conditions and closures frequently with the Caltrans QuickMap tool, exercise caution while driving in the mountains during inclement weather, and carry appropriately sized tire chains or cables.
