On the night of October 17, 2005, Sergeant First Class Alwyn Cashe led a patrol in Iraq’s perilous darkness when an improvised explosive device struck his Bradley Fighting Vehicle, igniting a ferocious blaze.

With the vehicle’s driver trapped inside, Cashe and a buddy braved the flames, extracted him, doused his burning uniform, and carried him to safety while under a torrent of enemy gunfire.

Soaked in fuel, Cashe’s own body caught fire, searing his skin with excruciating intensity. Yet, with second- and third-degree burns over 70% of his body, Alwyn Cashe pressed on, returning to the blazing wreckage to rescue four more soldiers.

Realizing two others remained missing, Cashe plunged back into the vehicle, pulling them to safety. As medevac helicopters descended, Cashe, barely clinging to life, insisted his wounded men be evacuated first, embodying selfless sacrifice.

Tragically, Alwyn Cashe succumbed to his wounds on November 8, 2005, after weeks of battling in a military hospital. For his valor and sacrifice, he was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.

Said his sister: "Alwyn did it for the love of his men. That's just who he was. A hero."

May his soul find eternal rest, forever honored among the nation’s greatest heroes. God bless Alwyn Cashe, an American hero🙏🏼🎖🫡🇺🇲❤️
