Fall Naturalists in open! This is an outdoor science and math exploration class for homeschoolers ages 5–12. September 9 - October 14, 2026, once a week on Wednesdays from 9:30am-1:30pm. We can even incorporate your homeschool math curriculum into our day!

We’ve built bird houses, hunted for bugs, made ant farms, snuggled with ponies, and played lots and lots of games. We’ve had so much fun and camp isn’t over yet!

It was an amazing first day of camp on the farm! We began the day with a special visit from mini pigs and a bunny. Campers also enjoyed learning about an old butter churn that we discovered in a barn on the property and lovingly restored. We then made and sampled our own fresh butter and made crafts from sticks collected on our nature walk.

At Barn Buddies today we learned about horse breeds and built obstacle courses for our pretend ponies and our real ones! We cooled off by giving the ponies a bath.

One of our riding students recently said, “It’s impossible not to be happy when you’re on the farm.” We couldn’t agree more!

We wrapped up a wonderful 6 weeks of Spring Naturalist class this week. We will be offering another 6 week class in the fall and we also still have space in our June 8th camp! See below for a few of the topics we covered during these engaging outdoor education classes.

During the last 3 weeks we learned all about birds, studied force and motion, and studied seeds. We used binoculars to watch birds and categorized their behavior (walking, flying, singing, or eating) and made a chart with tallies based on our observations. We used gravity to make cars roll and measured their distance at different hill heights. We learned about radius, diameter, and circumference and used circles and arcs to create flower pictures. We learned about seed dispersal and looked at models of some of this, like an animal with burrs and a balloon exploding to show how seeds can be scattered.

Congratulations to our 5 Merrimac Farm riders who successfully passed their Pony Club certifications with Roanoke Valley Pony Club this past weekend! They worked hard and showed off all their horse knowledge and riding skills.

Another beautiful Sunday at Barn Buddies! Kiddos learned how to clean stalls and worked on leading and grooming their ponies. Those blue ribbons are filling up with their hard earned badges!
