When guests destroyed our Dutch oven last summer I was heartbroken, more by the concealment than the act, and more by the irreparable damage done attempting to scrape off the burnt-on food than the fact of the burn itself. I recently purchased as a replacement this latest addition to our , a high-sided 6.5 quart pot suitable for deep frying should you be so inclined (and why not indulge yourself - you’re on vacation!) Just be careful!

An old friend often fills the back of his vehicle with plants before heading home but whether or not that’s your thing, getting in a good browse at Mainescape is a must. Right up the street!

BLUE HILL—In January of 1982, Don Paine moved into a little yellow farmhouse on South Street in Blue Hill. He had already been running a landscaping business for five years, since moving to the area after finishing his landscape architecture degree. Early beginnings The new property meant he could...

There’s no denying 2026 is a special year, and how better to honor the Sestercentennial of our Declaration of Independence than to celebrate in dignified fashion in a place that in its modest way played a significant role in the Revolution? Castine is always worth a visit but this summer perhaps even more than usual.

For this 250th anniversary year of the Declaration of Independence, CHS partnered with Maine Historical Society to digitize our original Revolutionary War era archives and put them up online. You can view them on Maine Memory Network:

https://www.mainememory.net/search/more?cp=CastineHS

They include original strategic maps, military correspondence, travel passes, and contemporary publications about the Penobscot Expedition battle that occurred right here in Penobscot Bay.

H/t to cousin Annemarie, a valued & long-time guest! The Blue Hill Peninsula is a short drive from Acadia and well worth exploring in its own right.

Looking to skip the crowds of Mount Desert Island but still crave that classic Maine coastal magic?

Head to the peninsula just next door — a quieter stretch filled with storybook towns, forest trails, and sparkling bays. 🌊🌲

Start in Blue Hill, where art galleries, cozy cafés, and scenic paddling spots line the calm waters. Hike Blue Hill Mountain for sweeping coastal views, or wander preserved trails protected by Blue Hill Heritage Trust.

Then drift over to historic Castine, one of Maine’s oldest towns. Stroll past stately homes, visit Fort George, explore the waterfront near Maine Maritime Academy, or hike to scenic overlooks in Witherle Woods above beautiful Penobscot Bay.

Boat lovers should stop in Brooklin — proudly known as the “Boatbuilding Capital of the World.” Breathe in the salty air at Harriman Point with views toward Mount Desert Island or wander the whimsical trails of the Hundred Acre Wood.

Finally, cross the bridge to Deer Isle and follow the road south to the lobster-fishing village of Stonington. The island’s rugged beauty even inspired John Steinbeck while writing Travels with Charley in Search of America. Here you’ll find working harbors, quiet preserves, and even a hidden Sand Beach reminiscent of Acadia.

✨ Fewer crowds, timeless coastal towns, and endless outdoor adventure — sometimes the best Maine discoveries are just next door.

An art exhibition not to be missed! Possession of original works by Francis Hamabe (known to me in childhood as “Uncle Frank”) is something of a class signifier among Blue Hill summer families. You’ll be able to spot ours right away.

Save the date! Francis Hamabe's Maine: A Life in Art will open at the CHS on May 23. This exhibition explores the life and career of Francis Hamabe, who spent more than forty years living and working in Maine. Francis Hamabe’s Maine is truly a collaborative exhibition, with nearly every object, archival document, and photograph loaned to us for this first-of-its-kind career retrospective of Hamabe, curated by Carl Little.

Open house and reception June 20!
