Don't throw an apple at us. 🫣

Even though the common pronunciation in Southwest Virginia is "apple-atch-uh," there are many ways to pronounce "Appalachia." At least, that's what Virginia Tech research has found. The Speech Lab, a network of Virginia Tech faculty members whose work involves linguistics or language science, partnered with the "Appodlachia" podcast to explore the differences in dialect across the 13-state Appalachian mountain region.

At Lynn’s Drive In in Bluewell, West Virginia you’ll find a true roadside throwback where the food still comes straight to your car. Pull into a space, order through your window, and relax while a carhop brings everything out fresh. The menu is packed with drive-in favorites, including footlong hot dogs covered with chili and slaw, hot burgers from the flat-top grill, crisp fries, corn nuggets, and plenty of other filling sides. Sweet choices are just as memorable, with thick shakes in flavors such as peanut butter and grape, along with unusual seasonal treats like cantaloupe soft-serve. Lynn’s was built and opened in 1950 by Dorothy “Dot” Hale and her husband, Ruck, and Dot created the original chili recipe still used on its famous hot dogs. Today, it is recognized as the only drive-in restaurant left in Mercer County. Prices remain easy on the wallet, servings are generous, and the quick, welcoming service keeps longtime regulars returning. Whether you stop during a southern West Virginia road trip or make Lynn’s the main destination, it offers a rare chance to enjoy classic carhop dining much the way local families have for generations.
