Hey Guys
I just spoke with the Fire Chief. I had his cell phone number from when I have worked with him down at Boca Bay.
He said the island is in very bad shape. The Gasparilla Road is entirely underwater with 4 to 5 foot sand dunes all the way down through it at the end of each road. Lee is in there now with heavy equipment starting to move the sand so the water can start to recede. he said Gilcrest is entirely impassable. Most of the roads on the island are washed away. The main waterline, feeding the island under the Causeway washed out and is broken in many pieces. He said it could be weeks to a month before water is restored to the island. he said sewer lines are broke in many locations as well. no power, no water no sewer, no Internet. Nothing on the island for quite some. They have had multiple 1000 pound propane tanks float up out of the ground and are leaking. they have had generator fires at Homes . They can smell remnants of things that have burnt, but they have not been able to access all of the island to find out where it is coming from. He basically told me the island is very dangerous right now and will be at least a few days before it may be possible for people to come on. He was sitting in Walmart parking lot in Englewood making phone calls when I talked with him because there is no cell service on the island. I will keep you guys informed if I hear back from him on anything.

After an eternity of preparing my historic office (which lost its foundation in Ian) for the worst, and my fortress of a townhouse from storm surge flooding (10” from Helene) I am at peace in FtLauderdale. I am blessed with amazing people in my life who worked to exhaustion to help me. I cannot thank them enough. Thank you all for your prayers and concern. Excited to get home and pick up the pieces, although the Island is inaccessible and may be that way for a long time😵‍💫
