White-wings in the sorghum…

Gotta love a hot white-wing spot, a fantastic way to spend the day. We are located 6 miles from the largest white-wing roost in Tamaulipas and possibly the world. Holding an estimated 20 million birds, it’s truly an impressive sight to see.

Mourning doves will start showing up in numbers around mid September and adding daily to the population. Mid September to Mid October the area around the lake, is a dove hunters paradise.

Mexico’s Premier Wild Quail Operation

We averaged 30 coveys a day this year, and are already seeing chicks in numbers. Where most places think of Wild Quail as an after thought; it’s what we do. 30 coveys a day, in the wilds of Tamaulipas, field lunches out in the Mennonite fields, coveys in the orange groves. It’s more than just a hunting trip, it’s an exploration of what makes Tamaulipas a quail hunters paradise.

We are adding to our kennel this summer, some pointers and hopefully a setter. We have three promising English Cocker pups that will have their first season next year. And can’t wait to see them in the field. The first El Dorado bred dogs. When we say we’re a quail lodge we mean it. We live it, wild quail are our obsession. Our goal isn’t just to be a good operation, it’s to be the best wild quail lodge in the world….period.

Plain Chachalaca

“Almost always heard before it is seen, the Plain Chachalaca is sort of a long-tailed, tropical chicken that lives in the treetops. These sandy brown and gray birds walk along tree branches to eat flowers, buds, fruits, and insects. They’re locally fairly common in brushy and thorny forests along streams in the Rio Grande Valley and south into Central America. Though their plumage is subtle, their raucous, rhythmic morning chorus is anything but—a classic sound of the Tamaulipan brushlands that livens up any outing.“ - All About Birds

IYKYK… there’s no one else like him. If you want to shoot quail, stay close to Simón. As head scout, he’s an integral part of our operation. He’s in the field listening long before you get there, he knows his coveys by the hundreds and over thousands and thousands of acres. He knows doves and how they fly, when they fly and where they fly. It’s more than a skill, it’s a gift. Come find out for yourself.

In the home stretch…

Been an unbelievable season, with great people. And a ton of birds! It’s always a little melancholy to wind down at the end of the season. But the dogs need a rest, and the birds need to do their thing. We are already seeing paired up birds, and the cover is fantastic. We should be heading into a good nesting season, the cover is strong, habitat is looking good Al around.

About the photo, Mickey is our Kennel manager and dog handler. He takes pride in the dogs and his work. It shows in how well he cares for them. He is an integral part of our operation, and we’re proud to have him on the team.
