Sometimes I arrive here
with plans.
Great things,
I tell myself.
I’ll write.
I’ll draw.
I’ll read.
I’ll create.
I’ll study.
I’ll learn.
I’ll become.
These are the promises I make
as I pack my bag,
imagining my escape
to the house in the trees,
lifted high above the river
that curves around the bend
and holds her close.
But then the bags are set down.
The tea kettle sings.
Fresh mint releases its sweetness
into the warm air,
rising toward the cedar beams.
And slowly,
without asking permission,
my eyes grow heavy.
I curl into the green velvet sofa
like a cat finding its favorite place.
The great plans wait.
The books wait.
The blank pages wait.
And maybe today
I will simply sleep.
Maybe later,
I will do the things
I came here to do.
Or maybe I won’t.
Because somewhere between
the steam from the kettle
and the afternoon light,
I remember,
I do not have to earn
this moment.
Presence holds me.
No matter what.
