From the Archives: The Early Resort Era

At the turn of the 20th century, Useppa was beginning a new chapter.

Chicago businessman John M. Roach developed the island as a tarpon-fishing resort in the late 1890s, helping establish the hospitality tradition that would become such an important part of Useppa’s story.

This circa-1900 photograph shows the Useppa Inn and Roach residence during those early years.

Native to Southeast Asia, the Lipstick Palm (Cyrtostachys renda) is famous for its brilliant scarlet-red crownshafts and lush tropical foliage. A true equatorial beauty and one of the world’s most striking ornamental palms—now growing happily on Useppa Island. 🌴

🌴 Traveling the World with Palms — Cuba

Giant Yarey Palm — Copernicia fallaensis

Few palms make an entrance quite like the massive Copernicia fallaensis. Native to Cuba and commonly known as the Giant Yarey Palm, this spectacular species connects Useppa Island’s rich Cuban history with our growing collection of remarkable Cuban palms.

From the Archives: The Tarpon Wall 🎣

What exactly are we looking at?

This remarkable photograph from around 1920 shows a wall on Useppa Island covered with tarpon scales — a fascinating reminder of the island’s deep connection to the “Silver King.”

By the early 20th century, tarpon fishing had become an important part of Useppa’s identity and its appeal to visiting anglers.

More than a century later, this photograph preserves a wonderfully unusual piece of that fishing history.
