The Escalante River flows through the heart of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The river drains the high elevations of the Aquarius Plateau beginning northwest of the town of Escalante at the confluence of North Creek and Birch Creek and dissects the southern end of the Escalante Anticline in a spectacular canyon light colored Navajo Sandstone. It flows 145 km generally in a southeasterly direction cutting through Kayenta, Wingate and Chinle formations to join the Colorado River in Glen Canyon (Lake Powell).

However, because North Creek and Birch Creek are diverted for irrigation, most of the river’s flow comes from Pine Creek, Death Hollow, Sand Creek, Calf Creek and Boulder Creek. Each of these streams flow off the Aquarius Plateau.

Did you know the Grand Staircase preserves more of the Earth’s history than anywhere on the planet?

“The Grand Staircase is an immense sequence of sedimentary rock layers that stretch south for 100 miles (161 km) from Bryce Canyon National Park through Zion National Park and into the Grand Canyon. In the 1870s, geologist Clarence Dutton first conceptualized this region as a huge stairway ascending out of the bottom of the Grand Canyon northward with the cliff edge of each layer forming giant steps. Dutton divided this layer cake of Earth history into five steps that he colorfully named Pink Cliffs, Grey Cliffs, White Cliffs, Vermilion Cliffs, and Chocolate Cliffs. Since then, modern geologists have further divided Dutton's steps into individual rock formations.”

Around 225 million years ago, great eruptions of ash from volcanoes to the south buried a massive forest of now-extinct conifers. The ash preserved the trees, contributed to their petrification, and resulted in the colorful clays we see in the Chinle formation.

The dynamic soil, lack of water, and soil chemistry make it difficult for plants to grow here, but they still do! Prince's plume is one of those plants.

2025 Free National Park Days!

Start Planning Your 2025 National Park Trip!

Are you ready to explore the beauty of America's national parks? In 2025, the National Park Service is inviting everyone to plan and prepare for their next national park trip now! Do it! Right now! Okay, maybe over the holidays.

Next year, the National Park Service will waive the entrance fee to all national parks for six days —an opportunity to experience the wonders of nature, culture, and history without the cost of entry!

Now before you say, “I’m not going on those days, it’ll be too busy,” consider visiting a park off the beaten path, a park closer to home, or pick and choose from one of the 431 national parks found across the country. Whether you’re a family looking for a weekend getaway, you’re looking to get away from your family, or you’re just a group of friends or a solo hiker looking to connect with nature, free entrance days make it easier for everyone to explore the parks.

The 2025 free entrance days are:

📌 January 20 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
📌 April 19 – First Day of National Park Week
📌 June 19 – Juneteenth National Independence Day
📌 August 4 – Great American Outdoors Act Signing Day
📌 September 27 – National Public Lands Day
📌 November 11 – Veterans Day
