Shkodër, Albania filled my heart in more ways than I can express. The people, the culture, the food and my hostel community made this part of my European trip something I will never forget. So incredibly grateful 🇦🇱🫶🏼✨

Hostel update: we STILL haven’t made any sort of progress on the physical part of our building. With a scheduled professional third party fire inspection scheduled for later this week, we hope to have more movement with insurance and physical repairs in the next week or two but I will keep you posted! Thank you all for the love and support during my journey to two hostel conferences in Europe while navigating the current situation of our hostel in Bozeman 💜🏠

Tomorrow marks 3 weeks since our upstairs neighbors had a fire and Treasure State Hostel was flooded.

Three weeks.

And somehow, we haven’t even started the actual demolition yet.

We haven’t opened up the ceilings. We haven’t torn into the walls. We haven’t started removing and rebuilding the parts of the hostel we already know were severely damaged by water.

Not because we’re sitting around waiting.

Because apparently before you can tear apart a ceiling, several insurance companies must first gather around it and decide who would like to pay for said ceiling. 🙃

We never thought we’d find ourselves yearning for last year at this time, when life was simpler and “just a flood” from the same upstairs neighbors was somehow easier to navigate than a much more complicated fire… then flood.

So here we are.

Three weeks in. Still closed, still navigating insurance, still documenting, still answering questions, still trying to move things forward — and becoming increasingly aware that this is going to be a long road.

BUT.

This week, we are going to Europe.

Maybe literally. Maybe figuratively. 🤣

Our actual trip to Europe for two hostel conferences — planned and paid for long before any of this happened — is hopefully 5 days away, assuming we can get enough handled here to actually get on the plane.

But first…

OKTOBERFEST IS TWO DAYS AWAY! 🍻🥨🇩🇪

Our friends and community are bringing a little piece of Europe to Bozeman with an Oktoberfest fundraiser for Treasure State Hostel. gute Laune

So whether we make it across the Atlantic next week or not, apparently we’re going to Europe one way or another.

And after the last three weeks?

We’ll take it.

Come have a b**r, eat something delicious, celebrate with us, support the hostel, and remind us that even when the rebuilding hasn’t technically started yet, moving forward can look like a lot of different things.

This is going to take time. We still need help. And we are nowhere near the end of this — hell, we haven’t even really begun yet.

But we’re still here.

And two days from now, we’re putting on our dirndls and lederhosen. 🍻🥨

Our hearts hurt for you Wild Joes Coffee Spot ❤️‍🩹💔

Dear Wild Joe*s Customers,

Wild Joe*s has never belonged to me…. It has always been ours. Thank you for giving place to our space, for being here, with us. Wild Joe*s has been somewhere that so many of us can find comfort, not only in coffee but in each other. It's a space where we can all gather, no matter who you are. A space to connect, to grow, to expand. This could not happen without you. Without your thoughts, smiles, to do's, and moments.

Thank you.

After 25 years… our lease will be involuntarily terminated and a new business is already in line to rent the space. If you or someone you know is interested in continuing the Wild Joe*s legacy in a new location, we would love to hear from you. These community gathering places must continue to exist.

My heart is broken to think of the community of this space that will be lost, this amazing group of baristas, students, professionals, families, and retirees, who gather daily to share a space with each other. We see you, nearly everyday, and we will miss you.

🌍 𝟭𝟭 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗟 𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗘… 𝗠𝗔𝗬𝗕𝗘. 🤞😂

Long before the fire and flood that closed Treasure State Hostel, I had plans to head to Europe on October 5 for two hostel conferences — learning, connecting with hostel people from around the world, and bringing new ideas home to TSH.

Obviously, A LOT has changed.

And here’s the part I genuinely could not make up:

𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐈 𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐋𝐒𝐎 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠. ⚠️

Yes.

Two years.
Two conferences.
Two completely separate floods.

Apparently attending the Hostelworld Conference while my hostel is closed from flooding is becoming an annual tradition I very much did not ask for. 🙃

And because our circumstances have changed so dramatically since this trip was planned, I want to be completely transparent:

💜 This trip was planned and paid for before the fire/flood.

💜 Money donated toward Treasure State Hostel’s recovery is NOT funding this trip.

Your support is going where you intended it to go: helping TSH and our people recover and work toward reopening.

But there’s one more important detail:

I still don’t know if I’m actually going. 😂

There is A LOT that needs to happen here between now and October 5th, and Treasure State Hostel has to come first.

So…

Welcome to our slightly unconventional countdown.

11 days to see if we can get enough accomplished that I can actually get on that plane.

Current Europe status:

👉 🟡 IT’S COMPLICATED
🔴 Staying home

If they wanted to do the right thing, they would have.

They can still choose to help their employees. They can still choose to make sure they are taken care of. That’s why we are opening our home to some of our displaced staff after their rooms became uninhabitable.

Our management team is working overtime and being paid for those hours, but they would have appreciated having some help cleaning up a mess they didn’t create.

We gave money to people we had never met, to guests we would never have the opportunity to host, because we believe that when people are hurting, you help them. You treat them with dignity. You show up for your community. And YOUR COMMUNITY SHOWS UP FOR YOU 🫶🏼💜❤️‍🩹🏠✨

That is the true Montana way—not simply something you say on a menu.
