Great reminders and travel info shared by Yellowstone NP. This is a great page to follow if you are traveling Montana, heading to the parks, or heading out adventuring. And the photography never disappoints! ;)

"Do I need to carry bear spray even if I don't plan to hike in Yellowstone's backcountry?"

Short answer: Yes!

Wildlife, including bears, roam where they please. This means bears could venture through a parking lot, boardwalk, road, or trail, so it's important to be prepared no matter where you are in the park:

❗ Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

🧍‍♀️🧍🧍‍♂️ Hike in groups of three or more, stay on established trails and boardwalks, and make noise.

🐻 Carry bear spray in a readily accessible location (not stored in your backpack) and, most importantly, make sure you know how to use it!

🛑 Maintain a distance of at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears, wolves, and cougars and at least 25 yards (23 m) away from all other animals.

📸 Use binoculars, a telescope, or a telephoto lens to get a closer look.

📞 Report bear sightings and encounters to a park ranger immediately!

Updates on Yellowstone National Park. Spring weather in Montana is unpredictable, it can roll in fast and furious. Be prepared when traveling and look ahead at road conditions. It always surprises me how fast the weather can change across our big beautiful state!

(News Release UPDATE) Yellowstone entrances and roads scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Friday, April 17 will instead open at noon due to a significant winter storm with heavy snow, low temperatures and strong winds.

The park received up to 12 inches of wet snow in certain areas, and more snow is forecast tonight with temperatures dropping to 10 F, creating hazardous driving conditions like deep snow, ice and poor visibility. Additionally, NorthWestern Energy crews are currently working to restore full power to Canyon Village and Old Faithful due to weather-related outages. Park crews will continue plowing roads through tonight and will assess conditions in the morning.

This delay does not affect the road from the North Entrance in Gardiner to the Northeast Entrance near Cooke City, Montana, which remains open. Expect winter driving conditions.

Anticipate possible road closures due to inclement weather. Temporary travel restrictions or closures can occur at any time without notice. Have flexible travel plans.

Road sections expected to open at noon April 17:
- West Entrance to Old Faithful
- West Entrance to Canyon
- Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris
