The sea turtle nesting guide you didn't know you needed 🐢

June is peak nesting season on Anna Maria Island, and if you're spending any time on the beach this month, here's what's actually going on out there.

Loggerhead sea turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs in the soft sand above the tide line. They've been doing this on these same beaches for longer than the island has had a name. The orange stakes and yellow tape you'll see on the beach mark active nests. There are usually well over 100 by the end of the season, many of them right where you're walking.

A few things that make a real difference 😊
👉 Give the marked nests a wide berth, especially at night. Don't walk between a nest and the water after dark. And if you're on the beach in the evening, keep phone screens and flashlights pointed down or off. Hatchlings navigate by moonlight and get genuinely disoriented by artificial light. It's one of those small things that costs you nothing and matters a lot.

The Manatee County Sea Turtle Protection Program monitors every single nest on the island through the whole season. They're out before sunrise most mornings. If you see someone with a clipboard and a headlamp near the water at dawn, that's them;and they're some of the most passionate people you'll ever meet briefly on a beach.

Nesting season runs through October. Hatchlings start emerging in late summer.

If you're lucky enough to witness either, a mama coming ashore or a nest erupting at night, just watch quietly. It's one of those things you don't forget.

The south end near Bradenton Beach has more of the classic beach-town energy.
