Dinner cooks slower out here. That's the point.

Nobody's checking a clock at the picnic table. The coals take their time, somebody's kid is still in the water, and the light on Lake Somerville goes gold before anybody thinks about plates. That's the whole reason people keep coming back to this stretch of shoreline, and it's why we've never tried to make Overlook Park into anything fancier than what it is: an easygoing basecamp with clean spaces, 138 acres, and the lake right there.

More than 100 RV sites, lakeside cabins, tent and daily sites near the water, a pavilion when the whole family shows up, playgrounds, a marina, boat rentals, two boat ramps and covered boat storage. That's the setup. The rest is up to you and whatever you brought in the cooler.

There is a folding table by the gate on show nights with somebody sitting at it who will have you through in about ten seconds. That is the entire entry process, and it is worth explaining before the weekend gets here.

Nine days out, so here is how Saturday works. Five dollars a person at the gate and that covers the music. If you have a camping reservation for that night, the show is included and you come in on the reservation, whether that is an RV site, a cabin, a tent site or a daily site. Parking is on site. There is no fixed seating on the lawn, so a chair or a blanket is the one thing you need to remember.

Music runs 5:00pm to about 9 with Hayden Baker, Mason Marek and Cathey Bolin. No Clue Cookers will be cooking and the Nectar Drink Bar is doing dirty sodas, so nobody needs to eat before they come.

Labor Day weekend is doing what Labor Day weekend always does out here. The cabins and the waterfront RV sites for September 4-7 are the first to fill, they always are, and this year is no different. If you've been sitting on it, consider this your nudge.

Wake season isn't over till we say it is. Somebody asked us this week if we were winding down out here, and the honest answer is no, not even close. The mornings have been glass, the kind of water where the first boat out gets a mirror all to itself, and Lake Somerville is still holding onto its summer warmth.

September on this lake is one of the better-kept secrets in this part of Texas. Fewer boats, longer light, and the same easygoing basecamp waiting when you pull the rig back in. We've got 138 acres, more than 100 RV sites, lakeside cabins, and tent and daily sites down near the water for folks who just want to hear it at night. Two boat ramps, boat rentals, a marina, and covered boat storage if you'd rather leave the boat here than tow it home every weekend. That last hour of light is when Lake Somerville starts giving them up. Cut bait, a little patience, a chair that leans back far enough. Best part is you're not driving anywhere afterward. Your site is right there, the cooler is right there, and if the bite quits you're already home.

You can tell a lot about a guitar by where the finish is gone. Hayden Baker's Telecaster is rubbed down to bare wood where his forearm rides it, and that only happens to an instrument that gets played instead of collected.

Ten days out from the show, and the question we keep getting is a fair one: who is this guy? Hayden Baker is a Texas country songwriter with a new record called Alive & Well. He writes plainspoken and he leaves room in the arrangement for that Telecaster to say something back. If your people like the Texas end of country, the part that kept its twang, he is going to land just fine.

Pick of the row today. Somebody's getting this view for the long weekend.

There's always one site that everybody slows down for on the way past. Right now it's this one, sitting open with a clean line straight out to the water. Full hookups, level pad, and the kind of afternoon light that makes the whole trip feel worth the drive.

We don't sugarcoat how this works. The good sites go first, especially heading into a long weekend, and there are only a few left. If you've been going back and forth about it, this is the part where you decide.

Ramps open, slips ready, lake waiting. Midweek has no line.

This is the little secret of Lake Somerville. Saturday morning you might sit a few minutes at the ramp while somebody figures out their trailer. Wednesday morning you back down, unhook, and you're idling out before your coffee gets cold. Both boat ramps are open, the slips are ready, and the water is about as uncrowded as it gets around here.

If you've got the flexibility, take it. Pull the kids out for a day, work from the picnic table, run the boat in the morning and nap in the afternoon. That's the easygoing basecamp we're built for out here on 138 acres.
