From the cafés of Paris to the flowering gardens of Cape Cod: one of this morning's breakfast offerings -- our Candleberry Inn Croque Madame -- started as a memory from Innkeepers Eric and Charlene's travels through Europe.

"I had this dish a dozen ways in Paris cafés before I ever thought about making my own," says Chef Eric Taubert. "But I didn't want to just copy it — I wanted it to taste like where we are."

His version swaps pain de campagne for Portuguese muffins (bolos levedos), a Cape Cod staple most people outside New England have never heard of, and glazes the ham in organic Maine maple. Doused with a decadent Gruyere Mornay, finished with an over-easy egg, plus a dash of truffle zest -- and then served on a bed of fresh arugula -- and it feels right at home at Candleberry Inn on Cape Cod :-)

New England Innkeeper Charlene Taubert has been busy in the Candleberry Inn on Cape Cod kitchen cooking up this batch of Millionaire's Shortbread as an afternoon treat for our guests!

Sometimes we call them our homemade Twix bars.

Charlene's scratch-baked version is a fond look back at a circa-1972 Scottish version of this storied recipe (Chocolate Caramel Crunch) -- using a few modern-day baking tricks :-)
