Wishing upon a star...or a comet. What a shot!
Neowise II
Spending an extended weekend up in Eastport, a clear night was in store for the first night we arrived. So we made a plan to view the comet as a family at a little ocean side park. It was a really cool experience to share with my children, that I know we will remember for a long time. No cameras, just experience and making memories.
After doing that, I dropped everyone off at home for bed and made my way to West Quoddy Head to photograph the Milky Way. Not knowing if the comet lines up, and noticing it was starting to get close to the horizon, I saw what seemed to be an open field and a clear view to the northwest, so I zipped around and pulled over. This time I set up the tracker to see what kind of detail I could get. Using just 30 second exposures, I was awed by the second tail of the comet I didn’t see in my previous image. So I snapped 10 of them for stacking, then turned off the tracker to grab a couple foreground shots. I had no idea what it looked like, so I’m pretty happy with the result. The bushes and trees really ground the image a give a good sense of scale to make the comet look huge just over the tree line. While I won’t have any more clear skies this trip, I am very thankful for the one night I did get, to make this image, and others I’ll be working on eventually, but even better to share a moment with my family having a once in a lifetime experience.
