This is a favorite place to visit while at the cabin! Any time of the year! 🥰
One of the Great Smoky Mountains’ most unusual but stunning drives is the "Road to Nowhere" near Bryson City, North Carolina. This short stretch of mountain road began in the 1940s after Fontana Lake flooded old roads and cut off nearby towns. A new road was promised to replace them, but the work stopped before it was finished. Today, the pavement runs about six miles into Great Smoky Mountains National Park and then ends without warning at a long, dark tunnel carved straight into the mountainside. The drive feels extra special in winter, when bare trees open wide views of the ridges and the peaks are sometimes dusted with snow. At the end, you can walk through the quiet, graffiti-covered tunnel or head out on trails that lead deeper into the park. It’s an easy drive with a strange past and a haunting ending you won’t forget.
