🚂 177 TONS... and you can turn it by hand?!

Meet Steam Locomotive #1702 at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in Bryson City, NC.
Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1942 for the U.S. Army during World War II, this historic steam engine is still taking passengers on adventures through the mountains today.

And check out what #1702 is sitting on. The Bryson City train turntable was built by Bethlehem Steel in 1937. The locomotive and tender together weigh about 353,540 pounds, but because everything is carefully balanced on the center pivot, the train can actually be turned by hand!

Pretty amazing railroad history right here in downtown Bryson City.

Gene has been out exploring again, and look who he ran into at the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center... Carl the Smokies Sasquatch!

Apparently, bears and Sasquatches can get along. At least long enough for a picture. 😂

While you’re hunting for Carl, be sure to spend some time exploring the Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center. The historic schoolhouse was built in 1926 and is celebrating 100 years in 2026! Today, the Center helps preserve our Appalachian heritage with local arts and crafts, music, festivals, classes, exhibits, and more.
