Shaconage (pronounced Sha-Kon-O-Hey) meaning "Land of Blue Smoke" is the Cherokee word for the Great Smoky Mountains. This region’s blue hues can be traced back to a surprising source: our green forests! In order to protect themselves on warm days, trees emit a compound called isoprene. Isoprene is highly reactive and appears blue as it combines with other gasses in the atmosphere.

Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a day to be with those we love…and what can you love more than the wildlife of the Smokies?! However, please keep in mind that park wildlife can get “too much love” by visitors approaching too closely or not properly securing their food and trash. Luckily, this can be fixed by never approaching within 150 feet of large animals like bear and elk and making sure that wildlife can’t access any human food.
