Public Statement
Earlier this evening, our camp staff were informed by Salem State University staff that an individual with a weapon was alleged to be in the area. Upon this notification and the recommendation of the police department, we followed our security protocols by securing our campers, parents, and staff inside the facility while staying away from windows and doors.
The lockdown lasted for about 25 minutes and then our staff were contacted by Salem State University staff and informed that the suspect had been apprehended and the lockdown was lifted. We resumed normal camp activities and the kids, parents, and staff returned to our evening festivities.
Guard Up is very proud of the speedy and careful response enacted by our staff who have been trained for this type of scenario. We would like to commend Salem State University for their prompt and notification, excellent coordination and responsiveness. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the Salem Police Department for their swift response and safe resolution of the situation.
We would like to continue to request that the media refrain from attempting to interview our staff and campers. Our staff have a singular focus of keeping our campers physically and emotionally safe, and having a fun and educational experience. Furthermore, only authorized adults or their parents are permitted access to the under-aged campers as per state law.
If you have any further questions, please contact the Salem Police Department.
Thank you,
