While everyone else is still asleep, the sun comes up over the Blue Ridge and the whole sky turns gold. Sunrise is around 7:30 this time of year, so you don’t even have to get up that early.

Your week-by-week fall color guide for the Mount Mitchell area

Up here, the color doesn’t show up all at once. It starts on the high peaks and works its way down into the valleys, so there’s something new to see each week into early November.

Here’s when to go where:
🥾 Oct 1–8: High peaks. Hike the Mount Mitchell Trail.
🛣️ Oct 9–15: Ridge views along NC-80 and the Parkway (check which sections are open)
💧 Oct 16–22: Waterfalls like Roaring Fork and Setrock Creek Falls
🍂 Oct 23–Nov 6: Valley color along the South Toe River

Think of these dates as a loose guide, not a set schedule. The weather decides when the leaves turn, and every spot on this list is worth a visit anytime this fall. Mix and match them however works best for your trip.

Most spots on the list are 10 minutes or less from the Lodge.
