North Atlantic Right Whale Calving Season- The North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is a large baleen whale hunted to near extinction for their oil by early whalers. Right Whales migrate between their feeding grounds in the Northeastern United States and their only known calving area, which is off the Southeast United States (present November through April). They can reach up to 55 feet in length, weigh up to 70 tons, and are identified by their lack of a dorsal fin, v-shaped spout, and distinctive patches of rough skin on their head called callosities. They are usually seen off the coast of St. Johns County between December and March. Kayaks, drones, paddleboards, jet-skis, divers/snorkelers, and boats must stay at least 500 yards away from these animals. If you see a Right Whale please call 1-888-97-Whale. Stay tuned as we will be posting more fun facts about Right Whales for the month of November.
