We usually try to stay off the radar, but what a joy it was to be in the center of the action today. The hurricane cleanup sponsored by the Buxton Civic Association brought approximately 200 volunteers who cleaned the debris from Old Lighthouse Road and the side streets that lead to the beach. We are so grateful to residents, folks from nearby towns, and even vacationers who pitched in to bring this part of Buxton back to life.

For those of you who haven’t had the chance to enjoy the pathway to the lighthouse which was completed last fall, I recommend you take a walk or bike ride to check it out on your next visit to our island. It begins at the National Park entrance on Highway 12 and goes all the way to the lighthouse site. There are even a few benches if you want to stop and rest. Here are a few scenes from my early morning bike ride today.

I still remember the place of honor award-winning books had on the shelves in the library of my elementary school. I never could have imagined that decades later, I would be sitting at the inn table drinking coffee with a guest who had won the Caldecott Medal, an award given annually for “distinguished illustrations” in a children’s book. We were happy to be a part of author and illustrator Jason Chin’s visit to Hatteras Island, which is the setting for his beautiful new book. He vividly captures how the people of our island are affected by hurricanes, and it is so fun to recognize sights that we hold dear. On your next visit, I hope you’ll stop by Buxton Village Books to purchase a copy.

We’ve hosted folks from North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia, but now we have our first guests from Down Under! A lovely Australian couple is spending five weeks exploring the east coast of the United States and we were lucky enough to be included in their travel plans. We’d love to be a part of your travel plans too!

We had a facelift over the winter- new siding and fresh paint. We think our building looks fabulous, but it would look even better if you were sitting on the porch.😀 We hope you can make plans to visit soon.

We had a glimpse of spring today- perfect for a stroll on tbe beach. This young lady sure enjoyed her time on the sand and even found a few shells. Wouldn’t you like to join us?
