On our Lake Owen Resort "List of Recommendations " is suggesting that people take the beautiful drive up towards Bayfield and drive the Fruit Loop.

The Bayfield Blueberries Are Ripe
Head up the ridge. The orchards above town are picking right now, and this is one of the best weeks of the year to be in Bayfield County.
A quick note on what you are picking. The berries at the orchards are highbush blueberries, tall shrubs that run six to eight feet, so you fill a flat standing up in the shade instead of crouching. They ripen late in the season and keep producing for weeks, which is why late August up here is peak time. The lake holds the temperature steady on that ridge and the fruit comes in big, sweet, and firm.
The wild lowbush blueberry is a different plant entirely. Ankle high, spreading through the sandy pine barrens by underground runners, with tiny berries packed with flavor. That crop comes and goes early in the summer and it is long finished by now.
Two different plants, two different seasons, both worth the trip. Right now it is the orchards' turn.
Bring a bucket, bring the kids, and plan on more than you meant to pick. That is how it goes every year.

Almost every blueberry operation on the peninsula sits along County Highway J above Bayfield, the stretch everybody calls the Fruit Loop.

Cornucopia, Herbster, and Port Wing
The west end of the peninsula does not have commercial blueberry orchards. The soil and the exposure out there never supported the fruit the way the Bayfield ridge does. If you are coming up Highway 13 from the west, plan on making the run around to J.
One more thing. Call ahead. Every one of these places picks out and closes for a day or two to let the bushes recover, and hours shift week to week this time of year. A two minute phone call saves you a forty minute drive.
