Mid-September through early October is one of the quieter and better-value times to visit Napa Valley. Harvest is active, summer crowds have thinned, and midweek dining reservations are easier to get. The Craftsman Inn is at 1213 Foothill Blvd in Calistoga, about a 10-minute walk from downtown. September 13, Lincoln Avenue closes and becomes a 1,000-foot table. Calistoga Harvest Table. 12 restaurants, 12 wineries, entertainment at 3:30 pm, dinner bell at 6:00. This year the theme is Groovy 70s. About a 10-minute walk from the Craftsman Inn, so nobody drives. Tickets are on sale; get yours and make it a weekend stay at Craftsman Inn.

Balloons go up at sunrise, which means an early alarm and a cooler start even in August. It's so worth it. Flights launch out of Yountville, and the valley looks like a different place from up in the air with the harvest underneath you. The front porch is one of the best reasons to love the Craftsman Inn. The architecture and original woodwork have been beautifully restored, but the porch holds a different kind of charm. Guests arrive after a long drive, park in the back, carry their bags up the steps, and then pause before going inside.

You can see them exhale the moment they step onto the porch. Every time.

There is something about a covered porch on a warm afternoon that feels like a promise. You have arrived. Your much-needed break has finally begun. The chairs are waiting. Sit for a while. You can explore later. Calistoga is not going anywhere.
