Camden Windward House

Camden Windward House Built in 1854, this charming 9 room Greek Revival home was converted to a B&B in 1985. Battie, begin with a short walk from the back door of our property.

The innkeepers provide a laid back atmosphere with attention to detail and made-to-order breakfasts. The Camden Windward House is a traditional Bed & Breakfast located just steps from Camden Harbor and all of the area shopping and fine dining. Listed on the national registry of historic places and located in the beautiful and serene Historic District of Camden, Windward House is a large 1854 Greek

revival style home that has been preserved for its historic charm yet updated with a casual feel. Access to over 30 miles of trails in Camden Hills State Park, leading to the breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Innkeepers Matt and Dan believe in providing a comfortable yet casual experience while paying special attention to the comfort of the bedding in the guest rooms and suites. All rooms offer air-conditioning, charging stations, cable television via Samsung Smart televisions, en-suite private baths, with some rooms featuring Victorian claw-foot soaking tubs, gas-powered fireplaces and private entrances.

Well…7 yards of stone later. 😅

Remember that winding path we carved through the new gardens? It’s starting to look like we actually knew what we were doing. 🌿

The first 7 yards of stone are officially in, and the new pathway is taking shape. Now we’re onto the part we’ve really been looking forward to—laying out the oversized stepping stones that will wind their way through the garden.

We sorted every stepping stone we found on the property over the past ten years first and now we’re strategically placing each one before filling everything in with the other 7-yard pile of pea stone.

Yep…14 yards of stone by the time this part of the project is finished. 💪

Next comes expanding the garden beds right up to the path, more planting, watching our young fruit trees grow into the landscape—and, of course, adding plenty of Windward whimsy along the way.

The goal is a garden you can wander through with no particular destination in mind. Flowers, fruit trees, hidden little surprises, music and soft lighting in the evenings. What else would you like to see?

🥾 From breakfast to the top of Mt. Battie—without ever getting in the car.

After breakfast, we headed straight out through the back gardens of Windward House and set off on foot for one of Camden’s most iconic adventures: Mt. Battie.

We took the Mt. Battie Trail up—an intermediate hike with a few fun scrambles along the way—climbing more than 700 feet above sea level to the summit.

The famous view of Camden Harbor wasn’t exactly cooperating today. 🌫️ The fog rolled in and blanketed the harbor below, but there was something pretty magical about having the mountain wrapped in mist. Sometimes the best hikes aren’t about the view at the top.

After celebrating our climb, we did what many locals do and picked up the Carriage Trail for a more leisurely walk back down.

Just under 4 miles. About 2 hours. And all of it on foot from our back gardens.

Our gardens are growing again… and this time, we mean literally. 🌿

What started as an idea a few years ago to transform more of our back property into gardens is taking another big step forward.

This week we rented a sod cutter, carved out a new winding garden path, and started edging everything into place. Next up: stone, oversized stepping stones, and expanding the surrounding beds right up to the path as we work toward creating an almost completely no-mow garden.

And then comes the fun part. 🌳🍎🌸

Watching our young fruit trees grow into the landscape, filling the new beds with flowers and plants, and adding all the little bits of Windward whimsy that somehow find their way into our gardens—along with ambient lighting and a little music for evening strolls.

One of our favorite things about Windward is that the gardens are never really finished. There’s always another path to wander, another flower to plant, and another little surprise waiting around the corner.

We can’t wait to show you what this becomes. 🌿✨

Just minutes from Windward House, some of our favorite local hikes take you up Ragged, Spruce and Pleasant Mountains—through quiet forests, across rocky ledges and to views that remind you exactly why this part of Maine is so special.

Whether you’re looking for a shorter morning hike or something a little more challenging, these trails are an incredible way to experience the other side of Camden—the mountains that rise just beyond the harbor.

Hike in the morning, explore Camden in the afternoon, then come back to Windward and put your feet up in the gardens. 🌿

It’s all part of what we love about being where the mountains meet the sea.

From the tree… to the table. 🍒

Our first cherry harvest from the garden this season turned into something even better—fresh tart cherry cookies straight from the kitchen.

There’s something special about picking fruit right outside and turning it into something to share—it’s a small moment, but one that feels very “Windward.”

It’s these little things that make a stay here feel just a bit more personal.

From early spring to now… 🌿

It’s been a season of planting, growing, and watching the gardens slowly come to life here at Windward.

What started as the first signs of green has turned into layers of color, texture, and blooms throughout the gardens—and we’re just getting started.

With all our dahlias planted, we’re especially excited for what’s still to come as the season unfolds. It’s going to be our brightest and most colorful yet!

Just a short row from the harbor… and it feels like you’ve gone somewhere entirely your own.

We set out from Camden Harbor and made our way across the water to Curtis Island Lighthouse—quiet, secluded, and worlds away from everything else.

No crowds. No noise. Just the sound of the water and one of the most peaceful corners of the harbor.

It’s moments like this that make a stay in Camden unforgettable—simple, a little adventurous, and completely worth it.
