The Story Behind the Diving Girl

Have you noticed the iconic Jantzen Red Diving Girl as you enter the Main House? There is a reason she hangs here—Jantzen has a special connection to House on Metolius. 💙

John A. Zehntbauer along with Carl C. Jantzen, started a small knitting company in Portland in 1910 that would go on to become Jantzen, one of the most recognizable names in swimwear. By 1920, the Red Diving Girl had made her debut and would become an iconic symbol of the brand.

A few years later, Zehntbauer and his family found their special place here along the Metolius River. In 1929, they built their summer home on the very spot where the Main House stands today. Nearly a century later, the property remains in the care of his descendants.

Walking the hallways of the Main House offers little glimpses into the past and the Red Diving Girl is just one small piece of the history woven into this place. A place where new memories continue to be made today.💫

A familiar view from a 1963 Dodge News Magazine advertisement. Even then, House on Metolius was celebrated as a peaceful riverside retreat—a place to gather with loved ones and reconnect with nature.

At the time, a portion of House on Metolius was under the care of Eleanor Bechen, who operated a small cabin resort along the Metolius River. Her legacy lives on in Eleanor's Cabin, our 100-year-old cabin overlooking the river. In those early days, guests staying in the resort cabins would gather for meals, conversation and the same beautiful views that continue to define this special place today.

More than six decades later, the meadows are still green, the river still flows crystal clear and families continue to make memories here. Some things never go out of style. ✨🌲
