Hello friends and fans! Several of you have reached out to check on us and we are grateful for your concern. I wanted to share some pics, as we were able to do some inspection yesterday because we could finally get across the low water crossing from our house. We didn't have much time because it started pouring again and we didn't want to get stuck in town, but here are pics of the road to the creek and the steps to the "bridge to arrowbithia" so many of you have crossed to walk our nature trail. Our buildings are all safe, and our kitties all showed up for food yesterday so all's well here. Pray for our community as people are flooded in everywhere and all roads are closed coming in and out. The flood this weekend means the river will be great here in about a week, so think about a late summer get away once our town is back to normal.

Long before Camp Wood, Leakey, or any of the ranch roads we know today, there was a Spanish mission built in the Nueces Canyon area known as San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz.
It was established in the 1700s during a time when Spanish missionaries were moving through Texas trying to build connections with local Native groups, including the Lipan Apache. The mission didn’t last long and was eventually abandoned, but it remains one of the earliest recorded attempts at settlement in this part of the canyon.
Today, there is almost nothing left to see and many people don’t even realize it was ever here. But the mission is slowly being rebuilt and more history is being uncovered. The canyon has been lived in, traveled through, and known for far longer than most modern records show.
Sometimes when you stand by the river or look across the limestone hills, you’re standing in a place with a history that goes back hundreds of years before roads and towns ever existed. Next time you are heading to Barksdale from Camp Wood look out your left side window and you just might see the flags flying high at the mission sight.
