Do you ever catch a glimpse of something ordinary and it just makes you stop and realize it’s ordinary? Today, it was muddy tennis shoes in the yard. Scattered toys. Those moments where I just stop to soak in the realization that it’s all temporary and fleeting and so special. I know one day their muddy shoes, many sizes bigger, will be left on porches all their own and they won’t need to show me the hole they dug, and I’ll have memories of little squeals and mud fights and laughter and dirty hugs and whispered secrets tucked deep into my heart. Some days, I stop and stare at ordinary things like muddy tennis shoes and I feel happy and grateful and hopeful for their future… and a little sad, too. I feel all of that at once and close my eyes, hoping I’ll remember this, too: that I did my very best to soak it all in, to feel it all, to hold it tight while it was right in front of me.
