As many of you are no doubt aware, we recently lost Stephen Tholcke following a valiant fight with cancer. Mr. Steve was called home to the Lord on Thursday evening and he leaves behind many family and friends who already feel this immense loss, most especially his beloved wife, Cheryl.
Mr. Steve was a giant in the Camp Pendola community. From 1983 to 2005, he served in various positions at Camp Pendola, including 14 years as Camp Director. His love and dedication for the campers and staff made a lasting impact on all of us, helping us to grow closer to God, His creation, and each other, often resulting in lifelong relationships. Many of us would come to know Mr. Steve not just as another staff member or the director, but as a big brother, father figure, and an example of living the Gospel in a real and tangible way. After Camp Pendola, he continued his life of service to youth and young adults, particularly as campus minister at St. Francis High School in Sacramento, where his enthusiasm and light was evident to everyone on campus, especially his students. Wherever he went, whether it was at Camp, at the high school, or any of the various ministries he served in throughout his life, Mr. Steve had a heart of deep love for the Lord.
None of us feel this loss more deeply than his beloved bride of 38 years, Cheryl. They were and are a true team, sharing many adventures both at Camp and throughout their lives, working tirelessly in the Lord’s vineyard to help others discover His grace, love, and mercy. As we pray for the repose of Mr. Steve’s soul, please continue to pray for Cheryl, their family, the Camp community, and all of us who mourn this tragic loss. Funeral details will be posted as they become available.
Goodnight, Mr. Steve. Go with God. You will be sorely missed.
