Here at Engadine, service members are part of the fabric of this property. From the founding of the estate to the support efforts in the days after the hurricane, that spirit of service has always been present here.

Today, on this beautiful Memorial Day, we honor the men and women who gave their lives for their brothers and sisters.

We decided to set up a table today and, honestly, after putting it together, I think it’s going to remain here permanently.

If you have a service member or veteran in your life, give them a call and check in on them today. Memorial Day can be one of the heavier days of the year for many who served. As says, “keeping names off the walls.”

Happy Veterans Day, You Filthy Animals! 🇺🇸

Civil War Captain John Keais Hoyt, the man who built Engadine Inn in 1885, served with the 3rd Alabama Infantry. Ironically, his second cousin was none other than General William Tecumseh Sherman.

After the war, Hoyt worked in New York at R.H. Macy, married Mary Elizabeth Bensel (Brush), and moved to Buncombe County in 1883 where Engadine was born. He later helped found the Western North Carolina Fruit Growers’ Association (1887), and his wines were poured at Asheville’s grand hotels, including the Battery Park Hotel, and even showcased at the 1893 Columbian Exposition and the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

Fast forward a century, our current proprietor Alex Jarbo is a former Marine Corps Infantryman who served at 8th & I Marine Barracks, Washington D.C., and later led the Marine Corps 21-Gun Salute Team at Arlington National Cemetery, conducting over 350 Marine funerals in honor of the fallen.

Today, we raise a glass to our history, our veterans, and our fallen brothers and sisters.

🍐 Engadine Spiced Pear Mead 🍯

Made with sourwood honey harvested right here on our estate and pears gathered from our 100 year old pear tree (pictured in the back) this small batch mead captures the heart of Engadine Inn in every bottle.

Fermented slowly through the cool mountain months, it balances golden honey warmth with the subtle spice and crispness of autumn fruit. The result is a drink that feels like sitting beneath that same old pear tree, calm, grounded, and timeless.

A true taste of the Blue Ridge, crafted not produced.
