Not so fun fact: 90 percent of the seafood consumed on the Oregon Coast is NOT sourced locally. That means that when you come to the coast for your summer vacation, the clams in your clam chowder are likely made with East coast clams. The fish in your fish & chips was caught in Alaska. The crab in your crab cakes might have been caught in Oregon, but shipped to Asia for processing, then sent back frozen. The carbon footprint and economic loss for local fishermen is huge.

So, how can you find the *actually* local seafood? Oregon Sea Grant has compiled a list of seafood markets: https://seagrant.oregonstate.edu/where-to-buy

The list is a great start, but when you order off a menu or at the fish counter, ask questions. Ask where the seafood was caught and processed. The best way to create change is to ask for it!
