We LOVED this rappelling route in Birch Hollow near East Zion. It is near Englestead, which is also a blast and ends in the narrows, but this one does not require permits, so that's nice.

It does, however, require a good high-clearance off-roading vehicle unless you want to walk a couple of extra miles. So Fun! Can't wait to do it again!

My neighbors call this place "Birthday Rock." Just before Calf Creek joins the Escalante River, the water spreads out over a slab of rock and there are holes, locally called "keepers" where softer rock has eroded, and fish hang out in deeper pools.

Reserve a cabin between Escalante and Bryce for access to this and many more outdoor adventures!

We have been very excited to show you our suggested 3-day trip covering almost all points of the compass 🧭 from Bryce Canyon Villas.

Take it from the locals. If we could come here for the first time, this is what we would do:

Day 1: West - Bryce Canyon National Park. Lunch at the Lodge. Dinner show at Ebenezer's Barn & Grill.

Day 2: East - Escalante. Lower Calf Creek Falls, OR Peekaboo and Spooky slots. Best done in comfortable temperatures. Eat at Escalante Outfitters.

Day 3: South - Kodachrome State Park, Willis Creek Slot Canyon, Cottonwood Narrows and Grosvenor Arch (not accessible in rain). Dinner in Tropic: Pizza Place, Idk Barbecue, Rustler's Restaurant, Showdowns with live music, or upscale Stone Hearth Grille at Stone Canyon Inn.

Willis Creek is a choose your own adventure. It should be a hike, but we mostly just use it as a swimming spot.

The creek is a great little slot canyon that usually has a small stream of flowing water. For hikers, it's a great introduction to slot canyons. Some people like to hike it in the winter to avoid getting wet.

As for us, we take the summer route.

Did you know that there is a park in southern Utah boasting over 5 square miles of sand dunes?

Taking the express ride from Escalante Navajo sandstone down to Kanab, buckets of sand gets dropped by the wind in a wide valley just before the Utah-Arizona border. Here it decides to stay.

Well actually, the wind moves it again about 50 feet per year. But it's pretty stubborn about not going too far.

These unique sand dunes are what happens when special wind patterns, called the Venturi effect, meet southern Utah red rocks. And they are the one and only home to the Coral Pink tiger beetle. Bryce Canyon Villas isn't too far away either.

Butch Cassidy was a famous outlaw who tramped all over the wild west in the late 1800s.

He was born in Beaver, Utah, and as a child, he lived on a farm just outside Panguitch, Utah, where a replica of his home can be seen today.

It was said that Cassidy once tried to kill a man in a fight over a woman at a dance. Afterwards, he took to the hoodoo walls of red canyon to hide out and avoid arrest. There's even a hike in the canyon called the Cassidy Trail that supposedly follows the route he took.
