Today marks the end of Iowa’s second turkey season—and what a season it’s been. With just two groups of hunters, we harvested 20 birds, and both groups filled their tags in under a day and a half of hunting.
Here’s a pic from opening morning to kick things off!

If you’ve hunted with us at Windy Ridge, chances are you know Haley — the smiling, hard-working, dependable force behind so many of the details that make your time here smooth and enjoyable. She’s the one making sure things are in order, the lodge is welcoming, and every little detail at the lodge is handled.

What many don’t see is the quiet strength she carries in her personal life. Haley’s mom is in the final stages of pancreatic cancer, and Haley — as the primary family member able to help — has taken on the responsibility of covering the majority of her funeral costs. The expense is overwhelming, but her love and sense of duty to her mom are unwavering.

Haley has never been one to ask for help, but right now, she needs her Windy Ridge family. If you’ve met her, you know how easy she is to love — kind, down-to-earth, and always ready to go above and beyond.

We’re sharing her GoFundMe link so that anyone who feels led can help lighten this heavy burden. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference in her life and be deeply appreciated.

🙏 Please consider donating and keeping Haley and her mom in your prayers.

It’s been a busy spring and early summer here at Windy Ridge Outfitting! As the days grow longer and the heat sets in, we’ve been hard at work laying the groundwork for a successful fall season—and that starts with food plots.

From clearing and tilling to planting and spraying, we’ve been focused on building high-quality plots that not only draw deer but help them thrive throughout the year. Whether it’s lush clover, brassicas, or soybeans, we’re setting the table now so our hunters have the best opportunities come fall.

This time of year is all about preparation. We’ve also been keeping tabs on trail cams, tweaking stand setups, and watching bucks begin to put on inches. It’s shaping up to be another exciting season in southern Iowa.

Stay tuned—we’ll be sharing updates as our plots grow, velvet starts to pop, and the countdown to deer season gets even closer!

After our scheduled hunters were done for the year, we received a call from Greg, an Iowa resident, that was dealing with stubborn late season turkeys and having a hard time finding one to wrap his tag on. He wondered if we would be able to help fill his tag. Steve was busy planting food plots and native grass but was able to park the tractor and take Greg out during Iowa’s last weekend of the 2025 season. After locating 6 gobblers Thursday night, Friday played out similarly to Greg’s 2025 season so far. Saturday morning started with 30mph winds and no gobbles from the roost, but shortly after fly down, a distant downwind gobble was heard. After working the bird for a few minutes, he stepped into view. Slowly, the gobbler worked his way in and Greg was able to make the opportunity count on this great Iowa Tom. This completed our 2025 turkey season at an impressive 21/21 tags filled for WRO clients!

Rosie was not only on her first trip to WRO, but also her first ever turkey hunt! Her husband, Woody, is no stranger to WRO, making several trips to hunt with us over the past 15 years. We put them on a farm with an old cattle pasture on a ridge that is surrounded by hardwoods and loaded with turkeys. Very early in their hunt they had 2 toms come into their decoys giving them an opportunity at doubling up for Rosie’s first ever bird, but Rosie had trouble seeing the red dot and after some confusion, Woody connected and the second bird ran off. Hours after the missed opportunity due to not being able to see the red dot, she got a second chance and made it count. Congrats Rosie on your first gobbler and thank you for letting us be a part of it! Congrats Woody, and thanks for choosing WRO for the past 15 years!

Bennett made his first trip to WRO from Mississippi for Iowa’s 3rd season. We devised a plan based on where we knew a couple of birds were roosted. Steve took him on his first morning to a foodplot where we expected the gobblers to show up, but the stubborn birds would not leave the timber to show themselves. After trying to work them, Steve and Bennett decided to move into the timber with them. Once they got close, this great Iowa gobbler worked into them perfectly. This bird made Iowa the 44th state Bennett has harvested a turkey in.

Tom started out as our first hunter of the third season hunt. The evening before, Steve was unable to roost any birds. With nothing more than a gut feeling they chose a blind in a cut corn field hoping to spot a gobbler that would work. For the first part of the morning this bird seemed to be responding to Steve’s calls, but after an hour he went quiet. They got out of the blind with a plan to move closer to the last location of this gobbler. Just as the decoys were put in the bag, they heard him gobble at 150 yards. They quickly put the decoys back out and climbed into the blind. Just as they sat down, the bird stepped into the field and spotted their decoy. The bird ran into their setup so quickly that Tom rushed a shot and missed at 12 yards. They then had to open another window in the blind for Tom to get off the second shot, which connected at 62 yards.
