Capitola Beach Suites is a rare architectural gem, a modern boutique hotel with a historic soul. Flatiron buildings, shaped like triangular wedges where two streets meet at a sharp angle, are common in big cities but rare in small coastal towns like Capitola.
Capitola, California’s first seaside resort (1874), grew organically around the beach, creek, and trolley line. The triangular lot we sit on was formed by the curve of the Esplanade, early roads to Camp Capitola, and the cluster of shops, inns, and cottages for vacationers.
This building, once the Harborlights Hotel is one of California’s few coastal flatiron buildings. Renovated into Capitola Beach Suites, owners added an elevator and rooftop terrace with a fireplace. During elevator installation, old trolley tracks were discovered. We are a family-owned boutique hotel that embraces the quirky, historic geometry and love being nestled in the heart of the village.
