May-June review:

Awesome property. Lower level of the owners house, but completely private and separate. the property is full of beautifully maintained fruit trees and other tropical plants, it's like staying in the jungle while still being able to see the ocean in the distance. kitchen is well equipped, bed is comfy, indoor and outdoor dining were great. the private hot tub and outdoor shower were amazing, we used them everyday. Saltwater pool was super refreshing. host has a fully stocked beach closest with chairs, snorkel gear, coolers and toys that we used when we visited 2 step down the road. the area is great, quieter than the busier Kona to the north, but close enough to still do all the tourist attractions up there. tons of great coffee shops and poke places nearby. awesome property, we hope to be back one day! highly recommend. host was very helpful showing us the ins and outs of this very unique property.

Another May review:

We enjoyed our stay at Kathy’s place, it was rustic and surrounded by beautiful plants and nature. The kitchenette was nice to have for making breakfast in the mornings. At night, the frogs and roosters were pretty loud, so earplugs may help if you are a light sleeper. bug spray a must for the mosquitoes if you plan to use the hot tub. Also, Kathy gave clear instructions about storing and throwing away food to help keep bugs and critters away, which makes sense for the tropical area. And no outdoor shoes be worn inside the lanai, so it may help to bring indoor slippers or sandals if you do not like walking barefoot. Following the instructions helps keep the space clean and comfortable. Overall, it was a nice and unique Hawaii stay.

May 2026 review:

f you love to snorkel, this is the place to stay! Hounaunau (2 step) is only a few minutes away. We visited our favorite underwater paradise early every morning. The breadbasket bakery lies at the entrance to the driveway, famous for its warm homemade bread and muffins. We relaxed in the hot tub and in a very comfortable bed. The outdoor shower was a high point of our experience. Mango, papaya, allspice and banana trees grow all around, with fresh fruit available. We lounged in our private yard and watched the birds. Kathy is a fantastic host. We loved staying here and plan to return on our next visit.

April 2026 review:

We stayed at Kathleen's place many years ago, and chose to return because we loved the location, privacy and amenities, including a well appointed kitchen to prepare meals. It's located just minutes up the hill from Pu'uhonua o Honaunau and Two Step, two special gems. (And when it's cool and rainy all week, the hot tub is a nice substitute for the ocean!) Kathleen is a thoughtful, eager to please host, but allows you complete privacy unless you need her. Once again, we really enjoyed our stay!

March-April 2026 review:

Our stay at Kathleen's Tropical Hideaway was just perfect for us, 2 good friends. If you want to enjoy the South Kona coast and the natural beauty of the land, this is the place for you. The open air and privacy of the little cottage was much appreciated. We loved the outdoor shower and hot tub with abundant hot water heated by the sun. Everything was in good repair and any problems were immediately attended to by Mark, the resident gardener. We felt very welcomed by them and the close neighbors. The location was excellent - so close to 2 Step for snorkeling with the incredible Peace Garden just down the road. We came right after a Kona storm so the Coqui frogs were active, but after a couple of nights we adjusted and they became just quaint background noise. We opened the couch for a 2nd bed and it was very comfortable. From the pictures I thought that the bedroom and living room were separate, but that was not the case. Luckily, It did not cause a problem for us.

March 2026 review:

Loved our stay here - truly, it was as advertised - a tropical hideaway indeed! Kathy and Mark made us feel welcomed and offered anything we needed. Including apple bananas and other fruits grown on-property. The coqui choir sang all night long and made our stay memorable. Two step - the best snorkeling in all of Hawaii in my opinion, just a few miles down the hill - and we were able to go each day of our stay. We even took in the Saturday evening mass at the painted church an were greeted with beautiful Aloha and leis. Highly recommend this lovely location.

I've gotten behind on posting reviews, plus I had friends stay for several months over the winter.
Here's a November 2025 review:

We had a lovely stay at Kathleen's Tropical Hideaway. The location was excellent and close to amazing snorkeling on the Big Island. We really enjoyed the private space in the lower portion of the house for our peaceful Hawaii vacation. The kitchen was furnished well for preparing our evening meals and we appreciated the availability of an outdoor grill for cooking too. The bed and futon were clean and comfortable and we appreciated the proximity to Captain Cook and the town's restaurants and grocery store. We hope to come back to Kathleen's Tropical Hideaway!

Another September review:

Couldn't have had a better experience at Tropical Hideaway! Absolutely incredible! Checks off all the boxes: location, all amenities, beautiful-lush-tropical, private. Kathleen was always quick and responsive to messages before trip and she met us as we arrived to show us everything. whirlpool bath, outdoor shower, pool and private yard/patio were highlights. All gear we needed for beach provided and much appreciated! Yes, the frogs were very loud when sun goes down and LOVED every minute of it. Bed was very comfortable. Kathleen's beautiful photography is there and also available to purchase. I don't feel there was anything lacking! The neighbor sells her yummy baked goodies daily at the beginning of the driveway entrance on the main road. I took so many pics here of all the varieties of plant life. Down the road 5 minute drive was best beach ever. Snorkeled with turtles (highlight) and beautiful coral and fish. Would stay here again in a nano second!!!! Blessed to stay here! ☺

September review:

Kathleen was a wonderful host! Her place was a delight as well! We really enjoyed the outdoor shower, hot tub and choir of frogs. She also had a good variety of beach related items to borrow during our stay which we utilized. The location was nice as it allowed us to do outdoor adventures as well as slip into town with ease.
