Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Linda Ruth Dickinson creates paintings that explore the relationship between space, line, and perception.

Working with both horizontal and vertical forms, she plays with optics to challenge the viewer’s sense of visual balance and gravitational security.

In Alignment, Dickinson considers how shifting perspectives can alter the way we understand our surroundings.

Through carefully constructed lines and spatial relationships, each work becomes an attempt to make sense of the world and our place within it.

Meet Linda and experience the collection during an evening reception with fellow art enthusiasts. Wine and passed hors d’oeuvres will be served.

A new season invites a new rhythm.

September marks the final month of our Summer Wellness Series, offering one last opportunity to find a moment of restoration in the natural surroundings of The Umstead.

Join us for Sunrise Yoga beneath a canopy of woodlands or settle into the evening with a Floating Sound Bath poolside or floating in our saltwater pool.

Priority reservations are reserved for our in-house guests, with a limited number of spaces also available for local guests.

Summer, by the glass.

This season’s cocktails at The Umstead and Herons draw on the flavors of long, warm days; ripe watermelon and peach, bright citrus, blueberries and lavender, cooling cucumber and coconut, with touches of hot honey, thyme and botanicals adding depth along the way.

Some are refreshing and floral, others juicy and vibrant, with a few spirit-forward pours made for lingering into the evening. Together, they capture the many moods of summer, one sip at a time.

Late summer brings one of the sweetest harvests to One Oak Farm.

Figs are ripening on the trees, their soft fruit deepening in color beneath the August sun.

Harvested at just the right moment, they offer a beautiful expression of the season and another reminder of how quickly the landscape at the farm can change from one week to the next.

As summer begins its slow transition toward fall, each harvest offers a glimpse of what is growing now and what will soon make its way from the farm to the table at Herons.

Our beverage team worked in partnership with Sazerac and Buffalo Trace Distillery to select a private barrel of Weller Antique 107, creating a single-barrel expression unique to The Umstead.

Aged for six years and bottled at its signature 107 proof, this special selection brings the character of one of America’s most recognized wheated bourbons to our collection.

We look forward to sharing the first pour with you soon.

Okra is having its moment at One Oak Farm.

Its delicate blossoms are giving way to tender green pods, thriving in the warmth of late summer. Harvested young for the best flavor and texture, the okra makes the short journey from the farm to the kitchens at Herons, where Chef Greene and his team allow the season to guide what arrives on the plate.

Another beautiful reminder that some of summer’s most interesting ingredients begin just beyond our doors.

Inspired by the natural world and the stories behind each creation, the artists featured in The Umstead Gift Shop bring a unique perspective to their work.

After a hike in Huntsville, Texas, glass artist Randi Solin was captivated by the vibrant berries of a Beauty Berry bush.

The moment inspired her to create Berry Beauty, hand-shaped from shards, cane, and frit while molten on the pipe.

The piece quickly found its home, and while it has since sold out, we look forward to welcoming more this fall.

From the expressive paintings of Clem Bedwell to the intricate ceramics of Jennifer McCurdy and the handcrafted glass of Randi Solin, each work celebrates the intersection of artistry and its connection to nature.

As summer unfolds, Farmer Adam walks the fields, taking in the changing colors that arrive with every harvest.

From golden corn and vibrant berries to bright green okra, delicate oxalis, and figs just beginning to ripen into deep shades of purple, each new hue marks another moment in the season.

Together, they tell the story of the farm and the ingredients that inspire the kitchen every day.
