Originally from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Simon brings more than two decades of wine and hospitality experience, including leadership roles at The Blue Point in Duck and most recently as Lead Sommelier at Sorelle in Charleston. His passion for wine, travel, and thoughtful hospitality has already made an impact on our team, and we are excited for what lies ahead.

As he settles into his role, Simon will help shape the continued evolution of Herons’ wine program, guiding thoughtful pairings, expanding opportunities within our cellar, and further enriching the dining experience for guests.

Farm Friday: Strawberry fields 🍓🌱

A morning in the rows at One Oak Farm bursting with the abundance of this delicious crop.

As spring continues to unfold, Chef Steven Devereaux Greene works closely with the farm team to understand what is thriving, what is coming into season, and how those ingredients might find their way onto the menu.

Now appearing on our foie gras course, these strawberries bring brightness and balance while offering a glimpse into the season ahead.

It’s one of the many ways our relationship with the farm continues to shape the experience at Herons.

Introducing our Summer Wellness Series at The Umstead.

This summer, The Umstead Hotel and Spa invites guests to experience a series of restorative wellness offerings in partnership with Dose Yoga.

Begin the morning with Yoga at The Umstead, offered every first and third Saturday from June through September on our Wedding Lawn. Surrounded by woodlands, with views of the rose garden and lake fountain, this guided outdoor practice is designed to encourage movement, mindfulness, and connection to the season.

Once a month from June through September, guests are also invited to unwind with an immersive Sound Bath experience at The Umstead Pool. Surrounded by healing frequencies, soft lighting, the sounds of nature, and gentle water, guests may choose to participate poolside or floating on the water.

We are pleased to welcome Jose Carlos Curci back to The Umstead Hotel and Spa as General Manager.

A familiar face to many, Jose’s return marks a meaningful homecoming, having previously held several leadership roles at The Umstead throughout his career journey. From Director of Banquets to Assistant Director of Food & Beverage, and later Director of Food & Beverage overseeing the hotel’s dining experiences, Jose has long been part of the story and evolution of our property.

Over the years, his leadership has extended to some of the country’s most respected luxury destinations, including The Peninsula Chicago, The Hermitage Hotel, Salamander Resort, and most recently Nemacolin Resort & Spa, where he served as Vice President of Private Homes and Estates.

Known for his commitment to service excellence and thoughtful leadership, Jose believes exceptional hospitality begins with caring for both guests and team members alike. His passion for building strong internal culture, fostering collaboration, and creating memorable guest experiences aligns beautifully with the values that define The Umstead.

We’re pleased to introduce The Point of View of Water, a new exhibition by North Carolina-based artist Clem Bedwell.

Inspired by the shifting nature of light, movement, and reflection, Bedwell’s work explores the surface of water as a constantly evolving canvas, where landscape and atmosphere are reimagined through abstraction.

Join us in the Art Gallery, where the collection will debut immediately after it is installed, offering a first look at the work and a chance to engage with the artist.
