It’s with a broken heart that effective today, we will no longer be opening as a traditional Bed & Breakfast. El Paso County, Colorado has decided after we had a hearing about lowering our tax assessment and won, to retaliate and come after us by taxing us commercially. Why do I say retaliate? I say this because, if we were quiet and let the county assess us at the rate they wanted, we would not have had them come after us. If we ran as a STR (short term rental), we would not have had them come after us. We have been running seasonally as a traditional B&B for nearly 8 years! Yes! 8 years! We had a hearing with the El Paso County Commissioners requesting permission, I had to pay for a liquor license, and B&B license, pay quarterly taxes, get finger printed, pay annual dues. For the seasonal time we are open, El Paso County wants to assess us at the commercial rate of 29%! To help alleviate our tax burden, they will lower the assessment from the $832k (originally $957k), to $631k, which would “only increase our taxes to $902 more dollars per year”. Oh how generous! *sacasm inserted*.

At this point on, we will run as a STR until Colorado decides that homeowners are no longer allowed to do that as well!
