Do you try to be quiet because the trout might hear you? Actually, they will feel you coming with their super sensitive built-in vibe check. As in vibrations... of steps in the mud along the shore line, or an oar in the water.
That faint stripe along a fish's side is the lateral line, a built-in sensor that reads movement and pressure in the water. Predators use it to hunt in murky water. Schools use it to move together. Their brains even filter out their own wiggles so they can focus on everyone else's.
