Resort owners and locals, please be aware!!!
We had a very sweet lady stop by the resort looking for accommodations. We set her up for the night and said she could pay in the morning. She claimed to not have money on her and lost her credit cards. Life happens, we get it. So, the next morning after several attempts to get payment and her calling banks and even Apple…. We knew something was really off.
As she was leaving the resort, I did a little googling, then reached out to her husband, 78, in Valparaiso, Indiana. He explained that his wife was suffering from mental illness and had left the house on July 7. She doesn’t have any money or access to money. She is driving a dark red GMC terrain. Her name is Barb Adams Smith, 68, US Army veteran. Her husband is very concerned for her safety. She will more than likely need gas and food shortly.
The Mackinac County sheriffs department has been contacted and is currently seeking her whereabouts to get her some help .

As of 11:00am 7/16/25 Barb returned to Hills Point Resort and is safe. Her husband is working with authorities and the VA in Indiana to get her help and get her back home.
Many of you have called and expressed concern, and helped to track her down. Thank you.
Having never dealt with anything like this, we have tried to be as discrete and respectful as possible, but felt it necessary to reach out to the community for help. Thank you for the genuine care and concern.

As of 2:00pm today 7/17/25 The Mackinac County Sheriff came by and help make arrangements for Barb to stay with the VA in St Ignace for the evening. She refused to go to the hospital and was very thankful and compliant. She was “given” a meal from a generous food truck owner in St Ignace today as she made her way to the accommodations.
She is still out and about in the area. The local authorities are unable to force her to get help, and the authorites in Indiana are at a stalemate with getting a court order as is her husband with getting a POA. I appreciate the phone calls and updates as I relay them to her husband. He is grateful for the information and glad she is safe and folks are watching out for her.
