From the Masury Estate side we are looking across the the Moriches Bay at the McAleenan Estate on the site of the old Hotel Brooklyn. The McAleenan Brothers two houses are clearly identifiable on the waterfront , Henry's on the left was later sold to the Ursuline Nuns and became Saint Angela's Convent and is a private residence today, while Joseph's house on the right was all but destroyed by the hurricane of 1938. The below commentary about the picture and the credit for this tidbit and photo go to http://www.spoonercentral.com/2005/LibaireCarsnBoats.html

"A FEW MINOR ADJUSTMENTS TO BILL'S OLD BOAT ......."

and we will be on our way. No doubt about location here. It is Moriches Bay That is probably Priscilla Sturges of the Sturges - Masury family riding with Johnny Libaire and Biddie Fenner or Bill Starke who seem to be intent on adjusting something on the 400 horsepower Liberty V12 engine. On the shoreline are the Henry and Joseph McAleenan Estates of which only Henry's (the left one) still stands. Johnny had recently purchased the boat for $175.00 from Otis "Oak" Palmer who built it in the late 1920's for Bill Dana. The price was right even if the old WWI aircraft power plant was balky. Photo is dated September 8, 1940.

In the beginning, prior to 1907 and prior to Sunny Meadow (Lindenmere property) James and Hester Keily and the young family of Warren Leslie Sr. and his wife May Keily Leslie summered at the Hotel Brooklyn in Center Moriches. Their future home the Leslie Estate(Lindenmere) would be slightly east across Areskonk Creek. The Leslie family were avid sailors, and were most likely in the picture. Warren Leslie Sr. a lawyer from Manhattan was the first Commodore of the Moriches Yacht Club and future owner of Leslie Estate (Lindenmere).
