The Depot Bed and Breakfast
About the Depot: The Depot was built before the Civil War in 1857. It was part of an inter-urban transportation system and was owned by the Illinois Central Railroad Company. Many train stations at that time were gathering places for speakers and community meetings. Since it was on the circuit traveled by Abraham Lincoln as a lawyer before the War, there is good reason to believe he visited the Depot on more than one occasion.
The Depot was originally located two miles to the east in the village of Savoy, and is known as the Savoy Depot. It was salvaged and moved to this location in 1984. As we have modernized the building, we have tried to preserve as much of its historical features as possible. For example, if you look at the cross-beam just inside the sliding glass door, you will notice graffiti from 9/11/1914 prior to World War I. And, if you look carefully, you may be able to see the remnants of the high and low temperatures for 1934 recorded in chalk. The pot-belly stove has an inscription indicating it was cast in 1872. We have other stories to tell if you are interested. In any case, we hope you enjoy our work of love.
