Monday was our August Supper Club, and I took exactly zero photographs of this one.

The meal was simple by design, with preparations intended to showcase the quality of the ingredients. The table was joyful, the glasses were full, the plates were passed around family-style, and the second month of my dinner party series went exactly as I’d hoped.

A great big thank-you to everyone who pulled up a chair. It was a good one.

Looking ahead 🍂

As the August humidity turns Virginia into a sauna, we’re so ready for the cooler nights and turning leaves. Now is a great time to plan your autumn escape to the countryside.

The Inn at Eagles’ Watch is a charming 3-room bed & breakfast situated on the Chickahominy River, 30-minutes from Colonial Williamsburg. Circa 1685, the Inn is one of Virginia’s oldest surviving brick homes.

My decision to start “Supper Club at Eagles’ Watch” came after reopening from maternity leave. Overnight guest bookings have been slow to pick up, and I genuinely wanted something to push me back into the kitchen. I hosted the first dinner party in July to eight familiar faces. Everyone ate well and I learned a ton.

My next event is August 17 and I have 4 seats left. It’s just me in the kitchen cooking what I love and serving it all family-style in the historic Eagles’ Watch dining room.

Here’s the menu I have lined up for August. I’d love to see you at the table.

Heirloom Melon // Prosciutto

Blistered Shish*to Peppers // Chèvre // Marcona Almond // Flake Salt

Sautéed Shrimp // Cherry Tomatoes // Garlic // Grilled Bread

Hand-rolled Pasta // Tomato Butter

What to do when the fields are bursting with the last of the summer’s sweet corn? Make corn cakes for breakfast, of course!

I blended the kernels from 1.5 ears of 🌽 with 1/2 c thinned yogurt and 2 Tbs melted butter, then added in the whole kernels I had left.

Stirred that into my dry ingredients: 1/2 cup corn flour (use a spice grinder to turn cornmeal/polenta into flour); 3/4 c cake flour; scant 1/2 tsp baking soda; heaping 1/2 tsp baking powder; 1/2 tsp kosher salt.

Used an ice cream scoop to mound batter into a hot buttered skillet. Cooked for 2 or 3 minutes per side.

Served with extra salty whipped 🧈 , warm 🍁 syrup, and the season’s best 🍑 & 🫐

Last week, eight people gathered around one table.

We celebrated the very best of summer with hand-rolled pasta, lump crab cakes, roasted beef tenderloin, peaches, sweet corn, berries, lush basil, and two fruit-filled desserts —all served family-style.

Thank you to everyone who trusted me with the very first Supper Club at Eagles’ Watch.

August is already in the works with a menu inspired by tomatoes, melons, and the last abundance of summer. Who’s joining us? The details of our next dinner party will be posted soon!

This morning’s Eggs Benedict started with a quick stop at our neighborhood farm stand for a basket of sweet little tomatoes. A toss with basil, chives, and olive oil made the perfect bright companion to an Italian-inspired Eggs Benedict, with prosciutto and homemade hollandaise.

Thank you Buckland Flowers & Produce, LLC for today’s beautiful tomatoes! 🍅

Marrying a farmer has its perks 🚜
Although it’s primarily a commodity farm, every now and then there’s a field of sunflowers 🌻
It doesn’t *quite* make up for the long hours and seasonal insanity… but it’s a start 😘

One of my favorite corners. Leather softened by generations, shelves lined with found objects and local history books, and a desk where every artifact seems to have a story of its own.
