1️⃣ Did you know? Juneteenth — short for June Nineteenth — marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free — over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

2️⃣ Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It’s also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, or Jubilee Day.

3️⃣ Texas was the first state to make Juneteenth an official state holiday in 1980. It became a federal holiday in the U.S. in 2021, signed into law by President Biden.

4️⃣ Juneteenth celebrations often include community gatherings, music, food, historical readings, and honoring Black culture and resilience.

5️⃣ Red foods & drinks like red velvet cake and strawberry soda are popular at Juneteenth celebrations — symbolizing perseverance and the bloodshed of ancestors.

6️⃣ Many people use Juneteenth as a day of reflection, education, and action — to honor history and continue the fight for equality.
