Pick your perfect Pine Barrens float: 1, 2, or 3 hours on the Wading River.

One of the easiest “right from the campground” adventures at Wading Pines is getting out on calm water for a scenic canoe or kayak trip—great for beginners and families who want a relaxing pace and a nature-filled view.

What’s included:
- Canoe or kayak, paddles, lifejackets, and transportation
- Recommended for kids 5+ (children under 5 are not allowed on rentals)
- Trips run throughout our April 1–November 1 season, with timing based on weather and river conditions

Trip options (approx.):
- 1-hour: Depart from the Wading Pines beach, paddle to Evans Bridge (pick-up) — $60
- 2-hour: Pick-up at your campsite, launch at Hawkins Bridge, paddle back to the Wading Pines beach — $70
- 3-hour: Depart from the Wading Pines beach, paddle through Wharton State Forest to Beaver Branch (meet & transport back) — $80

The Wading River is owned and administered by the State of New Jersey (Department of Environmental Services, State Parks, Forests & Historic Sites, State Park Service), so every trip feels like a true Pinelands escape.

Ever heard of sanding a cranberry bog? It sounds like a Pine Barrens myth… but it’s a real question worth digging into.

We went looking for a clear, historical explanation of this farming practice, and the search result we found didn’t actually explain sanding at all—how it started, how it works, or why growers did it. Instead, it pointed to a controversy in Plymouth where cranberry farming was described as “cover” for sand mining.

That left us with the more interesting (and more local) rabbit hole for Chatsworth and the New Jersey Pinelands:
- When did sanding bogs become common—and why?
- How would sand help vines grow (or help manage pests)?
- How often was it done, and did it vary by region?
- Is there visible evidence on old bog banks that shows those sand “layers”?

If you’ve got a trustworthy source (extension office article, cranberry growers association, local historical society, etc.), drop it in the comments—we’d love to learn and share what we find.

Save this for your next Wading Pines Camping Resort stay (Chatsworth, NJ). Bring the question to the campfire and let the Pinelands history lesson begin. We’re open April 1–November 1.

Step into a Pine Barrens town that time kept intact. Batsto Village is the kind of day you’ll talk about all weekend.

Tucked inside Wharton State Forest, Batsto Village is a preserved 19th-century industrial community—once a hub for iron and glass—where you can wander past 33 historic buildings like the Batsto Mansion, gristmill, sawmill, general store, blacksmith shop, and worker cottages. It doesn’t feel like a few artifacts on display; it feels like a real place with a real story.

Make it an easy add-on during your Wading Pines Camping Resort stay (Chatsworth, NJ)—especially when you want a low-key adventure that still feels memorable:
• Plan at least 2 hours to explore at your own pace
• Visitor center + bathrooms + free trail maps to help you get oriented
• Marked trails for different comfort levels, including the Batsto Lake Trail (a flat, family-friendly 4-mile loop)
• In spring, keep an eye out for wildflowers—yes, even purple pitcher plants

Looking for an easy, calm-water adventure right from camp? Our canoeing and kayaking trips on the Wading River are a gentle float that’s great for a wide range of ages and skill levels.

Bring a cooler and a picnic lunch, soak in the Pine Barrens scenery, and take your time spotting wildlife along the way. For rentals, children must be 5+ (and we recommend river activities for ages 5 and up).

We make it simple: we provide the canoe/kayak, paddles, lifejackets, and transportation. Trip times are approximate and can vary with water flow, weather, and paddling pace—boating is available throughout the season except during unsafe conditions.

Choose your float (approx.):
• 1-hour: paddle downstream to Evans Bridge, then we pick you up
• 2-hour: we shuttle you upriver to Hawkins Bridge, and you paddle back at your own pace
• 3-hour: paddle downstream through Wharton State Forest to the Beaver Branch landing, then we bring you back

The Wading River is owned and operated by the State of New Jersey.

Which trip fits your day best—1, 2, or 3 hours? Tell us who’s coming (kids 5+, adults, first-timers) and we’ll help you choose the best match.
