The Little O' Oprey House in West Fork. It was built in the 1880s by Col. Jacob Yoes who also built the hotel in Chester (now known as the Beard and Lady Inn).

According to their website, "The Little O’ Oprey has a new show with live music every Saturday night at 7 o’clock. Take Exit 53 from I-49 east to the corner of Main and Campbell in West Fork, Arkansas."

"Jacob “Blake Jake” Yoes was a miner, soldier, entrepreneur, and one of the best-known of Judge Isaac Parker’s U.S. Marshals. Jacob Yoes was born on December 3, 1839, in Washington County, Arkansas. Jacob Yoes died on February 6, 1906, and was buried in the National Cemetery at Fort Smith, Arkansas." -Legends of America

🌿 What’s in the Jar Wednesday? 🌿

Today we’ve got TWO jars fenugreek seed and flaxseed and together they make up my absolute favorite natural hairstyling product: homemade flax and fenugreek hair spray!

Flaxseed is where you get that beautiful natural hold, definition and volume. When simmered in water, flax releases a gel like mucilage that coats the hair, helping curls and waves hold their shape without that stiff, crunchy feeling. It can help smooth flyaways, lock in moisture and give the hair a fuller appearance.

Then we have fenugreek seed. Fenugreek is rich in plant compounds and that same slippery mucilage that makes it wonderful for conditioning the hair. It strengthens the hair at the roots, making it softer and smoother, while adding a gorgeous natural shine and helping tame frizz and tangles.

I like to combine the two by infusing flaxseed and fenugreek seed in distilled water, straining it really well, and putting the finished mixture into a spray bottle. You can play with the amount of flax depending on how much hold you want. More flax makes a thicker, stronger hold, while more water keeps it light enough to spray.

🌱 Want to give it a little something extra? Add some rosemary while you’re infusing it. Rosemary has been studied for its potential to support hair growth and scalp health, although it isn’t an overnight miracle. I also love the fresh herbal smell it gives the mixture.

Because this is a fresh, water based herbal preparation without a preservative, keep it refrigerated and make small batches. If the smell, color or texture changes, toss it and make a fresh one.

Nature gave us hair products long before the beauty aisle did. 🌿

Flax for volume and hold.
Fenugreek for conditioning, shine and frizz control.
Rosemary for a little extra scalp love.

Have a blessed and feral day, y’all! 🌿
