It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of legendary soul singer and esteemed community leader, Jerry Butler, MWPGM of the MWPHGL of IL. who left us on February 20, 2025, at the age of 85.
A Musical Pioneer
Born in Sunflower, Mississippi, and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Jerry Butler's rich baritone voice and heartfelt lyrics earned him the moniker "The Iceman." He began his illustrious career with The Impressions, alongside Curtis Mayfield, delivering timeless hits like "For Your Precious Love." Embarking on a successful solo journey, Butler graced us with classics such as "He Will Break Your Heart," "Only the Strong Survive," and "Make It Easy on Yourself."
A Dedicated Public Servant
Beyond the stage, Butler was a pillar of the Chicago community. He served as a Cook County Board Commissioner for over three decades, from 1986 to 2018, advocating for the arts and working tirelessly to improve the lives of his constituents.
A Brother in Freemasonry
In August 1986, Jerry Butler was initiated into North Star Lodge No. 1 of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Illinois, where he embraced the principles of brotherhood and service. His dedication and leadership led him to the esteemed position of 41st Grand Master of Masons for the jurisdiction of Illinois.
