Happy Spooky Season!

As an icon of the fall season, bats are part of spooky season decor across the country, but many people are unaware of the bats in their own backyards! Here at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, there are several species of bats roaming the night, including the pictured big brown bat, one of the largest species of bats in the United States. Bats on Assateague Island don’t live in caves; instead, they roost in tree cavities and under tree bark. These unique homes provide steady microclimates that protect the bats from extreme temperatures and provide shelter and camouflage from predators.

So many fond memories of nighttime fires on the beach and using flashlights to find the “ghost crabbies”!

Spotted on a Fisherman Island tour: this Atlantic ghost crab!

These critters are all over the beaches throughout spring, summer, and fall. You may have seen them running in and out of the burrows they dig in the sand or waving their claws around to act threatening. They eat just about anything: detritus, clams, insects, and even other crabs. Unfortunately, they may also take advantage of sea turtle or piping plover eggs. Particularly large ghost crabs have been seen dragging sea turtle hatchlings into their burrows.

Interestingly, these crabs appear to be able to recognize themselves in a mirror which indicates they have self-awareness!
